Intrusive Ads.

Postby Grummy » 19 Apr 2012, 13:51

As a rule I don't mind the ads, they surround the forum and site and I can pay attention or ignore them at my pleasure, but recently they've started to become extremely intrusive, particularly the video ad for Dishonored. It just drops down into view, covering up whatever you're trying to read and there's nothing you can do about it. IT would be one thing if it was a roll over ad that was just awkwardly placed, but its not. The ad I have for spec ops, and then this damn dishonored ad drops in. I don't mind the ads, they serve a purpose which is why I choose not to use and adblocker, but this damn dishonored ad is just far too intrusive, it really is removing the tinkle. There need to be limits. Is there anything that can be done about it, I don't want to resort to using an adblocker if I can help it.

It is fairly easy to get rid off but I agree with Grummy that it's far to in-your-face to be ignored like the others.

Out of interest, do you make more money from ads around the site or subscriptions to the magazine?

The finance of magazines in general is something I'm really interested in (unsurprisingly).

Not impressed. The bloody Dishonored ad has had it's alignment changed which means you can no longer find the little cross to close it!

I don't see any ads on this site, because I have every IE9 tracking protection list and have Flash disabled. It was that MW3 tosser that was the last straw.

Can I just say, as a lifelong Man Utd fan, considering recent revelations, are banner ads for The Sun really what you want on the site right now? Personally I think it's a little bit a slap in the face for Liverpudlians and Liverpool fans who frequent this site. Obviously it's not intentional, and I'm not saying that all people from Liverpool/support Liverpool will be offended, but even so.....

I'm sorry to bring this up again, but the ads for Colonial Marines are becoming unbearable, it doesn't matter what page I move to, the damn thing just pops up right in my face, could someone please talk to whoever deals with this stuff and do something about it, change it into a rollover ad or something if needs be.

Yeah same, however I'm not getting the ad, just a 'close' and 'sound' box option with nothing in between so I don't know the ad is there and I'm trying to click on the links for the web pages and lo and behold there's an invisible ad in the way. Really annoying.
...and if you tell that to the kids of today, they wont believe you!

I hear you. I'll ask the ad team if they can limit it to the standard side panel and background stuff.

FYI, we generally know nothing of such matters till they hit the site. Good for editorial integrity, not so good for shooting down annoyances in advance.
