Xbox Live Gold is free this weekend, but not for the UK

Your comments on our articles.

Alas, poor Blighty

Microsoft is giving away Xbox Live Gold for free from now through to Sunday in certain regions. The UK doesn't get a look-in, sadly. What gives, Microsoft? Is this some sort of post-Thanksgiving patriotic bash-the-Brits thing?... read more

Xbox Live Gold is free this weekend, but not for the UK

Postby Cokney Charmer » 30 Nov 2012, 11:19

The reason giving by Major Nelson when questioned about why the UK and Europe had been so blatantly left our of this promotion was this, taken from his blog:

"As noted above there was a UK only weekend recently, while the US did not have that one. We alternate what regions are unlocked on a varied basis. It all equalizes out in the end."

I think it would be very interesting, if you, as a games journalist, was to go back through 2012, and compare what promotions were EU/UK only from both Xbox LIVE free time to Xbox LIVE Reward Promotions and those offered to Regions like the US, Canada and the others featured in this promotion

US Xbox believe that it all balances out in the end, that may be the case in Free LIVE Weekends, but its certainly not in the case of Xbox LIVE Reward promotions with their Dark Knight Rises promotion about to start which again excludes the EU/UK

Be interesting to see what this comparison, if you do it, shows us?

None required, but it would be interesting to see what a comparison would show. There is really quite a negative reaction from the community in regards to the sharing of "spoils" from the Xbox brand's success. You only have to see the utterly pathetic way the 10th Anniversary of Xbox LIVE was handled to see that there is a lack of voice for the UK and EU Xbox Community's that its almost as though our sales, our contributions dont seem to count outside what I like to call the United States of Xbox

The Xbox Brand is really losing touch with its community I feel, from rubbish Deal of the Week offerings to how big events like celebrating a whole decade of this gaming Brand are utilised to sell the brand to us as a community

Thanks for the reply though, greatly appreciated

Ed, or anyone else in the know, this may be a daft question but is there anyway to freeze xbox live? By that I mean I have a subscription to next july but I will be without internet, is there anyway I can on the console freeze my subscription for awhile until I get internet back?

I'm guessing no but it would be nice.

That wasn't UK only, and it certainly wasn't recent.

No it wasn't recent but according to the update in the article the USA and the other countries listed didn't get it,so they are having it now.The USA always do better with the deals than us anyway which is a given really for saying MS are american.

But it was certainly memorable, i don't think i've ever gained so much XP in one weekend as i did that with easy Clanger kills! I'm still laughing at him having to play catch up on that donkey in RDR!
