To be honest, an "Advanced Redstone Circuitry for Dummies" book could do me wonders.
There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Golden tips to survive and prosper. Hmmm.

Mine would be gather wool immediately and create a extensive collection of tools before the first day is out. Find a village to camp out in until you have the guts to go out and build your own place. Always take a bucket of water when mining and only use diamonds on pickaxes and enchantment tables. Most importantly . . . have fun doing it!

The red stone book is a definite necessity for me.

As for starter tips...
1.Get wood, and make a crafting table.
2.Find and kill 3 sheep
3.Build a bed
4. craft a pickaxe and a spade, mine some stone to craft a furnace
5.use wood to burn wood to get charcoal so you can craft a torch.
6. dig a 3x3x3 hole in a wall, put your bed in and a torch.
(if you encounter any animals while completing the steps then kill em', you'll need the food.) That gives you a place to sleep so you don't have to worry about monsters. improving your weapons and tools is pretty self explanatory. Now go out, hunt, mine and build.
