10 completely optional side missions you simply can't miss

And not a fetch quest in sight

There's nothing quite as irritating in life as a pointless side mission. Collect ten randomly dropped trinkets and return them to an elderly sorcerer on the far side of the world map, escort an unarmed idiot with a death-wish safely across a minefield, watch your precious time on this planet slowly trickle away as a scientist noisily hacks a door instead of just going out the fire escape.... read more

Lord Rugdumph. The quest is 'The Noble's Daughter', one of the Fighters Guild quests in Oblivion. It's a goo one because Rugdumph is hilarious, a self styled 'Lord' Orc who speaks in malapropisms (replacing words with similar sounding ones to make nonsensical speech). It's brilliant.

Had to really wrack my noggin for that one, you did a good job on this, covered a lot of bases and listed many of the best from this gen.

I liked the "I Know You" side quest, especially at the point SPOILER ALERT where the man in the hat talks about the place of John's grave. He's like that guy in the suit in the original Half Life, you hardly see him but he is one of the most interesting characters you'll ever meet.

I liked the superhero side quest in Fallout 3 the Antagoniser and the Mechanist i believe it is. I know there are so many others but just cant think of them. And also the daedric quest in Skyrim were you get drunk and have to recount what happened the night before

Rugdumph , is a legend! Good shout.
I used to make arrow in the knee jokes , then Arm Fall Off Boy kicked me in the balls....... Come on Boon , quit teasing us with DLC characters we don't want , give us Arm Fall Off Boy dammit! Or at least give us Detective Chimp........

"You found my belabored daughter! I will tell Burz gro-Khash about your indentures! Take this. It has been passed in my family for many generators."
"Words cannot express my gratification for your help."

Rugdumph is truly brilliant!

It's unknown for sure whether the stranger is real or in fact a figment of John's imagination

Real or not, he doesn't cope well to a bullet to the back

One of my favourite side quest has to be finding as many ways possible to kill the adoring fan in Oblivion...........what's that?........not a side quest!?..............but you get such a satisfying reward!

the hilarious gargoyles in fable 2 or the gnomes in fable 3 were great side quests. the 'reward' for collecting all the gnomes in particular was brilliant, and well worth all the hassle, and maybe was even a bit bettert than the epic abuse they used to hurl at you...

about half way through ;)

Not a side quest per say, well it is, albeit a "hidden" side quest, i.e, doesn't appear on the quest list. Vault 11 from Fallout: New Vegas, it's the back story that makes it so great.

Also the Honest Hearts DLC has a great "side quest", in the Father in the Cave ambient story.

The side quest/mission UNC: Listening Post Alpha from Mass Effect is a great one too, it's the Starship Troopers vibe of the mission that gets me.

A good list for sure - the DB one in Oblivion is one of my favourite quests from any game - just such a shame it glitched on me first time i played it! Some good suggestions in the comments too...

As well as the gnomes/gargoyles (which i wasn't such a fan of), there's been quite a few decent ones throughout the Fable's to be honest, struggling to think of them now but an easy example is the one where you end up in a table-top role-playing game in #3. Think the archaeologist one in 2 was pretty cool too.
Sid is waving. Waving goodbye. It means he's leaving now. He's going. His final message to you, dear reader, is to always wash your hands after making a big pooh, and to remember that Hyrule Warriors is a thing…!

The side quest in GTA IV where you help the serial killer was particularly, memorable, climax of it was good too! The one added by dawnguard which involved trooping across dwemer ruins was also really memorable, best part about that DLC by far

The side mission, with the house, for the dark brotherhood in Oblivion is the t, it is the sole reason why I would replay oblivion. I don't know if dlc can count as a side mission but the citadel dlc for Mass effect 3 was my favourite out of it all. Some of the side missions on dragon age 2, whilst not being too good, depending on your conversation choices can be very funny.
The last side mission I will mention is the party side mission in skyrim where you start off in a drinking competition with some random guy at an inn and end up selling a goat to a giant, trashing a shrine, getting married and managing to make your way through a castle with loads of enemies around. In the end you get a staff from a god. I wish real night outs were like this

It was called "A Night To Remember" and it was for the Daedric Prince, Sanguine. It's just one of the stupidest and funny quests in Skyrim! Well worth completing as well. :D

Oh yeah, becoming a companion is really worth it; I get to do the same few missions over and over. Does saving some random dude who has a bear in his house, for some reason, sound familiar? The Dark Brotherhood or the Mage's Guild were much better. You said there wouldn't be any fetching type ones, yet you put in that Far Cry one; it is hardly dissimilar to The AC3 ones, which funnily enough is also made by Ubisoft.

Whilst I'm on it, the radio towers are the same as view points, the instinct view is the same as eagle view which is the same as Sam Fisher's goggles (also Ubisoft) which looks similar to Watch Dog's hacking phone thing, the hunting is similar, the trinket type things are similar. Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed all have free running stealth aspects and the latter 2 are open world, along with Far Cry. It seems all of Ubisoft's studios are "borrowing" ides of one another, which is a good thing in moderation, but Far Cry 3's collection, view points, hunting, etc. missions were exactly the same as AC3's, which is too much "borrowing" for my liking. Ubisoft needs to get some originality.
