Games within games? How very meta

Whether they're Easter eggs, menu extras, or subversive, post-modern commentaries on our favourite past-time and our often complex relationship with it, everybody loves a good minigame. So we've rounded up a collection of nine of the best. Or, to paraphrase that old Xzibit meme, "yo dawg, we heard you like games, so we put more games in your game so you can game while you game."... read more

Don't laugh.... but the original Xbox game, Madagascar, had some excellent minigames.
There were some mini-games unlockable from the main menu, but within the game there were (easter eggs) arcade cabinet games. One of them I remember well was a tank-based fort defense game... another one was a WW2 flyer-based blimp defense game. Anyhow they were all pretty challenging and fun.

I've played a lot of "kid" games that have built in some really fun minigames, often bowling, shuffleboard, golf, and little nostalgic nods to earlier arcade games like Frogger. I guess Wreck It Ralph echoes that spirit, too. I love Easter eggs like these. I hope with the next-gen consoles, developers will suddenly feel the urge to include more Easter eggs again, as, in my experience, the frequency of such occurrences tends to wane over time. Anyhow.. *fingers crossed* :D

the dashing Gnome Chompski, who can be equipped and used as a melee weapon.

you can melee with him, but its the same as meleeing with a weapon - so pointless for killing zombies. It's more of a painful chore for whoever gets lumbered with him

I don't remember duck racing in Shenmue 2! It might be time to dust off the old Dreamcast just for that.

And on the subject of games within games, what about 'Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3' from Doom 3? One of the most amazing games ever made.

Indeed it is. I wish they'd release both Shenmue titles on XBLA though, preferably with achievements.

Aaaaahhh Geometry Wars... the hours I spent having my retinas fried by its beauty. I was about 36 I think on the leaderboard for quite a while slowly being knocked down to about 300 I think, not bad out of half million players or so!

I could never quite get towards the astronomic scores some did, for a start you have to play a single game for over 24 hours, obviously using pause.

What a game... what a sequel... what a coffee addiction!

I've just found the poker minigame in far cry 3. Sadly this added hours onto RDR and I can see it happening again with this. Oh well, it's not like I wanted to complete the game ever anyways...

That was amazing, the music was so catchy. There were two other games in that weren't there?

System shock 2 had a few good ones, including a racer in which you had to shoot pigs, a pig version of minesweeper and an rpy adventure game. Only it wasn't xbox.

Absolutely loved Dead Ops Arcade. Better than the main game imo.

Yes it is, but it also had a late release on the Dreamcast. The main difference between the 2 versions is that on the Dreamcast it only had the original Japanese voices as they had to rush it to release due to the Dreamcast being discontinued. On the Xbox version they had time to record an English dub.
