Oh dear. I have been unable to install anything to my HDD for some time although playing from disc has been fine.

No I don't have 8gb spare - looks like I'll have to be old fashioned and get up and change disk if I want multiplayer

No, I don't have 8GB free either. But how mandatory is it? You say you'll need to install disc one in order to play multiplayer without switching discs. Does that mean that you could still
  • Play multiplayer if you do switch discs?
  • Play single player without installing disc one?
If you can, then not a problem. If not, then I'm going to have to get some more space somehow, and just to install things that I don't want.

They refer to it as mandatory, so I guess you'll need to install whether you're bothered by disc-swapping or not. Bit of a bummer, but there you go.

In that case screw Rockstar, not only will I have to buy their pricey game (GTA IV is still expensive for its age so this won't go cheap) but I'll have to buy an external as well

The install is like Forza. 1 disk install before playing and then the second disk is all you use after that. I would link to the Q&A on their website but Xbox IE has no paste options.

Memory sticks work fine if anyone is having trouble with hard drive space, they worked wonders for all the BF3 updates.

Not a problem for me but i am a bit baffled by the fact you need both discs to play rather than the red dead game of the year which has split discs for multiplayer and single player, im surprised they didnt do that rather than alienate or force people with 4gb xbox to buy external drives. It sounds to me like rockstar are sponsoring the external drive storage market and i blame the illuminati for it all.

How do people not have hard drives? Get with the times. Even a usb stick is like a fiver. People will complain about anything.
...and if you tell that to the kids of today, they wont believe you!

I tip my tinfoil hat to you.

I pre-ordered on PS3 because I suspected this would happen, with all the talk of a larger game world. R* are in full PR mode, so the drawbacks of having two discs aren't apparent yet. MS won't let an installed disc be accessed from the HDD without that disc in the console at some point, so I don't know where all this "no disc swapping" nonsense is coming from. I seem to remember someone else saying you wouldn't need to swap discs for one of their games, and that turned out not to be true because of the XGD3 disc check.

Not sure where you're coming from, forza 3, 4, halo 4 all are games on 2 discs where you play off one disc. So.... ????

I've never played any of those, so I didn't know it was possible.

Is it just me or are we going back to the days of Spectrum and Commodore when you waited an hour to install a cassette with the game :D
