As much as it pains me to say the Final Fantasy series has fallen from grace and I agree with SilentDark. Every new iteration pales in comparison to the franchises 16 bit and 32 bit days.
The characters are no longer compelling, instead we get hollow and irritating Japanese pop inspired characters with zero character development.
I miss the days of blue and grey dialog boxes as most of the voice actors are terrible and ruin any chance of liking a character. Tidus, Vanille, Sazh to name but a few.
I miss the exploration of the old Final Fantasy games that was made more fun by having a world map where you could freely roam and not be forced down a tunnel for the majority of the game. Final Fantasy 12 had a great open world...Just a shame the game played itself, the monster hunts were very good though and a lot more thought went into those than the hunts in 13.
I like to find secret areas with over powered monsters that you haven't seen in the game before. I want monsters to vary from location to location, to be location specific and not just be different coloured versions of previous monsters (that annoys the hell out of me)
I liked being able to choose my party and have it consist of the characters I like (though for that to happen they were actually have to be a likeable character) Maybe Square Enix should borrow from Mass Effect and have the characters dialog change depending on who you bring with you in your party. That way there's incentive to try the other characters even though you don't like them. James Vega anyone?
The way the characters level up in the XIII games is awful...there's no choice whatsoever, you just move along a preordained path...much like the actual game play really. Having summons take a backseat for the past few games was disappointing. On the PS1 they were they greatest asset you had in combat until you leveled up enough to be able to make use of limit breaks more effectively. Having one to a character was pretty naff too.
Sorry for the rant
