The biggest gaming successes that we never saw coming

Contrary to popular belief, we here at OXM are not infallible. Sometimes, we make predictions that ultimately, for one reason or another, prove to be misguided. I feel terrible for being one of the people who bought the Transformers game.

If you now tell me you haven't bought the really quite good War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games I shall weep for your soul!

I don't regret it. It made me appreciate just how good other games were, plus taught me never to by another movie tie in game ever again. And what excellent advise that was.
I had fun once, it was awful.

Game to movie always seems to go down better than movie to game. That being said I've been saying for years they should make a metroid movie, lack of dialogue yes but would be an epic. You heard it here first.

That's a brave argument to make with resident evil, mario bros and far cry sitting in your corner.

In fact can anyone think of a good game-to-film?

I think having Kinect Adventures in this bracket is a bit suspect being that it was the Kinect itself that people were really buying and KA just happened to be bundled.

No but i can think of more bad ones; Doom, Tekken, Silent hill, Max payne and Dead or alive. It
doesn't look good for the games to movie franchises. However I still have hope for a Mass effect movie.

Dead or Alive, it wasn't particularly good per say but it was in many ways the perfect game-to-film. DoA is hot chicks in very little clothing, the movie was hot chicks in very little clothing.

Street Fighter I actually kinda liked, Raul Julia was amazing, but I've also watched Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li so perhaps I appreciate how much worse it could get.

Of course we have King of Fighters which got absolutely everything wrong, and the Uwe Boll movies need no real explination.

So as for a game film that is actually pretty good, well the only one I can think of is Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. They manage to fit in all the fighters at the time (Super Street Fighter II Turbo cast) and the fight between Chun-Li and Vega is absolutely amazing. It was so good that it basically wrote the plot for Street Fighter games from then on with the Alpha series borrowing heavily from it.

I'd forgotten about that one, I suppose it would be ok though given that Jordan Mechner was involved with the writing of that one.

I haven't seen it, but isn't the Silent Hill film supposed to be decent?

I'll give you Silent Hill. I have seen it and was pleasantly surprised.

So in answer to my question we got one good film and a couple of "they could be worse" so that really doesn't prove game to film is better than film to game.

And for anyone who thinks Mario Bros is as bad as it gets I recommend Alone in the Dark. Need I say more than it has Tara Reid as a scientist?
