Success - the final refuge of the skilled

Here's a funny story: my original headline for this piece was "games that are fun to lose", which would have theoretically made it a feature about rooting through the unopened bank statements, licked-dry Pot Noodle containers and rogue socks that line my apartment for mislaid game boxes, hooting in ecstasy and despair.... read more

Spelunky HD I would argue deserves to be on this list - every time you die you tend to learn something that you can put into practice on a subsequent run-through.

OK, so it's not that jolly to suck at Battlefield 3 all the time. There's Call of Duty DNA in there, which means repeated and unfunny death in small spaces at the hands of fast-moving pros - the Operation Metro map's underground sections are notorious for this. But there's nothing quite like getting your arse ladled out to you on a grander, more open and vehicle friendly map, with plenty of buildings to cower inside.

Throw in a complementary tea-bag for good measure

Oh xcom, best game I've played in a long time, deffo top ten all time. I was on classic ironman about 75% way through when ONE rookie died and I had to pull back in a terror mission, long story short some of my squad shat themselves n kept missing, whilst the squad member who died turned into a drone, then there was a pretty much every civilian turning into drones, my team out of ammo... and well...

I would also argue that XCOM is not a fun to lose game.
When you lose your best character on Ironman, you pretty much die inside, the despair is such. This causes me to put the game away for a week before I can face it again.

Yeah but that's what makes the game great, hence why it's in the list.

Great that it is so compulsive you just cannot turn your back on it, even when it does its best to make you want to hate it. The mark of a brilliant game. Indeed, you're right Bezza.

I don't think it's fun to be terrible at any game and especially not Trials HD or Battlefield 3. The extreme courses on both the Trials games drove me insane until I was finally able to complete them all and I can tell you there were hundreds of restarts on each of them.

What dark something or other - second is due out next year and it is supposed to be really difficult - just not my type of game...

I only have 2 games on this list Trials and BF3

I personally think Trials HD is much more difficult than Evolution. Evolution has a much gentler learning curve - HD seems to get progressively more difficult and much quicker too....

I have been a CoD player since CoD4 but have only been playing BF since BF:BC2 (only own 2 BF games. I do not find the BF games to be all that difficult however I do struggle with the air vehicles and wish they put some form of 'combat training' as some matches are very dominated by 'pilots' which makes this game much more unbalanced than CoD in my opinion. However if you play game modes WITHOUT the vehicles (therefore everyone is more equal), I really do not think it is any more difficult or that I get killed more often. Since death streaks are no longer in CoD games - that has taken away a lot of the BS deaths I used to get. As for quick scoping - I have seen and been on the receiving end many times in BF3 too....

Bamozzy it's not about difficulty, it's about enjoying not winning.

Bamozzy's back! Not heard from you in ages, sir. Hope all's well. If you've yet to play Left 4 Dead I'd absolutely get involved with that - it's one of the finest co-op shooters ever made.
