"I think it wants them to go on their journey."

Microsoft has sunk around one billion dollars into Xbox One games development, and a healthy chunk of that has gone towards acquiring development studios, such as Max and the Curse of Brotherhood developer Press Play, or founding studios, such as cloud gaming specialist Lift London. Microsoft doesn't just want to buy developers, says Lionhead

After what happened to Rare I don't blame them but it does seem to leave a problematic no mans land in the industry for others which is a shame after seeing so many people go under this gen, where you see people like Platinum and Atlus and THQ struggle or go under, even giants like EA Square Enix and Capcom have struggled this gen and been forced to restructure is it industry growing pains or a larger problem that needs to be addressed?

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo seem to have got it right with indies and their e own studios but the mid tiers seem to be left to struggle or cannibalize each other, I would hate to see gaming turn into a AAA or Indie only and all the talent from like say Platinum, Atlus and the other mid tier guys for example just go to waste just because not every game of theirs is a multi million seller blockbuster.

I think the problem with this philosophy is most developers given the option will go to a 3rd party publisher like EA, MS really needs to go after these developers if they don't want to run the risk of them being acquired by someone else.

This is very insightful and he makes some very good points in favour of Microsoft; I always like it when people do that.
