Xbox One was almost called Xbox Infinity, Microsoft's Penell

"Who's to say that they didn't leak that name out?"

The original Xbox was once known internally as the "Microsoft Entertainment Activator" and "Real Performance Machine", among other things. A little more sanely, the manufacturer once dreamed of titling its third Xbox console "Xbox Infinity". Thanks to Xbox One marketing and planning director Albert Penello and Forbes for that particular revelation.... read more

Xbox Max. Obviously. (If you want, Max. can be short for Maximum, rather than Maximus (though remember what Maximus actually means, translated from Latin or whatever) )

I think we may have stumbled upon the reason you weren't hired by Microsoft's Marketing Team. :)

It's actually a bit of an in-joke, I believe. :D Can't remember why though...

No one can. Ed's right that its all Bezza's fault but I can't for the life of me remember how it started. We just all got fed up of calling it the 720 and soon even articles were referring to the next generation as Gertrude.

How she ended up with a slightly insane forum presence I'm even less sure about

The Gertrude could cook bacon though, I doubt this thing even gets hot enough to destroy itself, crappy well ventilated thing.

The only way MS will get me to order one anytime soon is if they embed thousands of Arnold and Sly quotes, so you get a new one everytime you start up the machine. Just casual things like 'Ice to see you', 'Here is sub-zero, now plain zero' and 'I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!' for when there's a system update.

We could consider her on par with the physical manifestation of the TARDIS.

I think that's why the poor boy has been so quiet you know, the disappointment of Gertrude not being let out of her closet.

I liked the idea of Infinity but with BioShock Infinite just released probably best not to confuse people.

All the things I might have suggested have probably already taken by graphics card or something.

I'm happy with One as a name though, the principle might be a little flawed (since really you'd need to have a set too box of some sort to use any of the TV features, thus immediately annulling the 'one for all' aspect).

I'm ok with Xbox One. But I would have liked more Xbox Infinity. :|
The only thing I'm angry about, it's that the Xbox One slogan isn't "The ONE console to rule them all. The XBOX ONE"

Ironic really. Going from 'Infinity' to 'One' is almost switching to the complete opposite.

Sorry to nit-pick but the opposite of infinity would be negative infinity. 1 is remarkably close to the middle of the number line. :D

Hahaha, very true... I'll rephrase: "Purely in terms of magnitude, going from 'Infinity' to 'One' is almost switching to the complete opposite"
