As long as it's not a one to one ratio on ads / songs this is a good thing, it'd be nice to play Last.fm style genres from inside a game, i.e. on my nice new shiny version of GTA V.

I approve of this

I was considering paying for it considering the Microsoft devices I use (Windows 8.1 pc, phone, xbox) making it marginally convenient, But I think I'm just going to leave it now.

Oh, hurrah! It'll give me a chance to sample some new albums. I don't mind the adds, it's only like listening to commercial radio.

So what happens to existing subscribers (like me) - will they stop charging or will I just get an ad-free version?

That picture is exactly the same as the Windows 8.1 XBOX music. Is that actually from Windows, or XBOX?
The windows 8.1 service is very good, an ad every few tracks.
With a Music Pass subscription, no ad's.
Just need the free/ad streaming on the phones now. Pass is the only way on the phones.

Ah, so I guess this is a sign that xbox music wasn't the smash hit that microsoft was hoping for. I found it to be okay, but not worth switching from what I use now (pandora and torch music). It's a saturated market, at least they're doing what they can to be more competitive.

That's good to hear (though how comes it's not free on 360?)

The big question is does it actually have any decent music, I mean a lot of the stuff I listen to is far from mainstream, will MS include Norwegian blackened funeral doom? xD
